Annette Howell Turner Center Secures $500,000 for Children’s Imagination Station
The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts in Valdosta, Georgia, has received a significant grant of $500,000 from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation. This funding will support the development of the Meta Shaw Coleman Children’s Imagination Station, an innovative facility aimed at fostering creativity and learning among children and families in South Georgia. The new interactive space is expected to open its doors in May 2026.
The planned 10,000-square-foot Imagination Station will feature hands-on exhibits and activities centered around science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). These engaging experiences are designed to inspire curiosity and promote lifelong learning. According to a press release from the Turner Center, the project represents a vital expansion of their campus, enhancing the resources available to the community.
Dr. Sementha Mathews, Executive Director of the Turner Center, expressed gratitude for the foundation’s support, stating, “This substantial gift from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation is a game-changer for our community. The Children’s Imagination Station will provide a safe, engaging, and educational environment where children can dream big and discover new possibilities.”
The Lettie Pate Evans Foundation is known for its commitment to cultural and educational initiatives that strengthen Georgia communities. This investment in the Children’s Imagination Station aligns with its mission to enhance accessible learning opportunities. The funding moves the Turner Center closer to its $8.5 million fundraising goal for the project, which has been in development for several years.
Evelyn Langdale, the Fundraising Chair for the Imagination Station, emphasized the importance of the project, saying, “It’s more than a museum—it’s a hub for creativity, connection, and a pathway to future career possibilities.” She noted that the grant is a crucial step towards opening this resource to families across the region.
Community members and supporters are encouraged to follow the progress of the Meta Shaw Coleman Children’s Imagination Station through the Turner Center’s website at www.turnercenter.org/childrensimaginationstation. There are still opportunities for individuals and organizations to contribute through naming rights, sponsorships, and end-of-year donations. Each contribution brings the Turner Center closer to realizing this transformative space for children and families in South Georgia.
