Poets from across Alabama will gather in Troy on January 31, 2024, for the Winter Meeting of the Alabama State Poetry Society (ASPS). The event will take place at the Johnson Center for the Arts from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This annual meeting serves as a platform for poets of various experience levels to engage in society business, participate in readings, and pursue professional development opportunities.

Founded in 1968, the ASPS promotes poetry throughout Alabama by organizing contests, workshops, readings, and publishing a quarterly newsletter known as the Muse Messenger. The Winter Meeting is a highlight of the society’s calendar, bringing together both seasoned poets and newcomers eager to connect and share their work.

Dargan Ware, president of the Alabama State Poetry Society, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the meeting in Troy. “ASPS is excited to bring our winter meeting, featuring a workshop by member poet Shannon Milliman, to Troy,” he stated. Ware also acknowledged the support from the Troy Arts Council, which has collaborated with the ASPS to provide volunteer assistance and logistical support for the event.

The Troy Tourism Office is also involved in planning and coordination efforts, aimed at ensuring a warm welcome for visiting poets. This collaboration underscores the community’s commitment to fostering artistic expression and engagement.

Participants can attend the meeting in person or via a Zoom option for those unable to travel. The event is open to both ASPS members and non-members, making it an inclusive opportunity for poetry enthusiasts. Advance registration is encouraged and can be completed online at [alpoets.org](https://www.alpoets.org/event-details). Registration fees vary based on membership status and attendance format, ensuring accessibility for all interested individuals.

As the Alabama State Poetry Society continues to nurture the poetry community, the Winter Meeting in Troy promises to be a vibrant gathering of voices, creativity, and inspiration.
