Author Kelli Stanley has unveiled her latest thriller, titled The Reckoning, which is set in Humboldt County during the pivotal year of 1985. Published by Severn House Publishers, this novel navigates themes of serial killers, corruption, and the illicit cannabis trade, centering around protagonist Renata Drake, who is driven by a quest for justice following her sister’s murder.

Stanley, a graduate of South Fork High School in Miranda, brings her personal history into the narrative. Growing up in the nearby town of Piercy, she has authored several acclaimed mystery series, particularly the award-winning Miranda Corbie historical noir series, which unfolds in 1940s San Francisco. Reflecting on her new work, Stanley noted, “I decided to move up in time to something nearer the present: the 1980s — an era in which I actually lived.”

A Deep Connection to Humboldt County

The inspiration for The Reckoning is rooted in Stanley’s deep connection to Humboldt County, where her parents, Van and Patricia Stanley, lived for much of their lives. “I know the area well and hold a deep and abiding love for it,” she explained. The novel is rich with incidents inspired by actual events from her youth, although all characters and plots are fictionalized.

“I had a wealth of memory to mine for a foundation I could then fictionalize,” Stanley elaborated. She even drew on her experiences working as a janitor at the Garberville hospital, a job she held before attending college. “For ‘The Reckoning,’ that experience became a significant element of the story.”

Stanley’s upbringing was marked by a unique rural lifestyle, devoid of modern conveniences such as a telephone or electricity, save for a gas generator at times. “It sounds like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ — and it was very unique,” she remarked. This isolation fostered her love for reading and writing, heavily influencing her career as an author.

Recognition and Future Plans

Stanley’s literary journey has garnered numerous accolades, particularly for her debut title in the Miranda Corbie series, City of Dragons. She noted, “Because of its wide distribution as a Book of the Month Club selection and other honors, it is probably the book for which I’m best known.” Recently, The Reckoning was honored as the Read of the Month by the Crime Writers Association in the UK, highlighting her growing recognition in the crime fiction genre.

In 2024, Stanley was named the Historical Mystery Guest of Honor at the Bouchercon World Mystery Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. “This was a huge honor,” she expressed, sharing the spotlight with notable authors such as Harlan Coben and Anthony Horowitz. She sees crime fiction as a creative outlet for exploring societal injustices, stating, “We get to create a world in which some price is paid, some justice is served.”

Looking ahead, Stanley plans to return to Humboldt County for local book signings of The Reckoning. She expressed her desire to connect with her roots, stating, “Normally, I would be on tour right now, but I’m facing a deadline for the sequel to ‘The Reckoning.’” The paperback version of the novel is set to be released in July 2024, providing another opportunity for engagement with her audience.

For those interested in reading her latest work, Stanley encouraged local residents to order through Northtown Books, which recently suffered losses from a fire. She also urges readers to request their local libraries to carry her book, emphasizing the significant role of the Garberville library in the story.
