Yoakum Community Hospital Achieves Accreditation from CIHQ
Yoakum Community Hospital (YCH) has successfully attained accreditation from the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ) following a thorough evaluation. This recognition, confirmed through a rigorous onsite assessment conducted from November 18 to 20, 2023, highlights the hospital’s dedication to maintaining high standards of safety and quality in patient care.
During the unannounced survey, the CIHQ team conducted a comprehensive review of YCH’s practices. This included touring the facility, examining medical records, observing care practices, and interviewing both staff and patients. The assessment was designed to ensure compliance with CIHQ Standards as well as the Conditions of Participation mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Richard Curtis, Chief Executive Officer of CIHQ, emphasized the organization’s commitment to enhancing healthcare quality. “CIHQ’s goal is to partner with hospitals to improve the care provided in our communities,” he stated. “CIHQ is proud to recognize Yoakum Community Hospital for achieving accreditation.”
Accreditation is a significant milestone for YCH, according to Tiffany Hintze, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. She expressed pride in her team’s efforts, stating, “Achieving accreditation through CIHQ is a significant milestone for Yoakum Community Hospital. What made this process different was CIHQ’s collaborative, education-focused approach. The survey was not just about compliance—it was about strengthening our systems, validating our culture of safety, and helping us continuously improve how we care for our patients and serve our community.”
Significance of Accreditation in Texas
According to the Texas Hospital Association (THA), there are currently 91 Critical Access Hospitals operating in Texas. Of these, only sixteen have achieved accreditation through CIHQ, underscoring the competitive nature of this recognition. The successful survey was the result of extensive preparation and a sustained commitment from the YCH team.
Susan Kutzer, Quality Management Director at YCH, described the efforts leading up to the accreditation. “This achievement reflects our consistent effort in updating policies, conducting internal audits and mock surveys, and strengthening documentation and care processes,” she noted. The hospital placed significant emphasis on reviewing emergency preparedness, life safety, infection prevention, and patient safety standards, all while fostering collaboration across departments to share best practices.
The ongoing commitment to improvement is evident in the culture at Yoakum Community Hospital. Hintze added, “This success is the byproduct of our team’s hard work, open communication, and shared commitment to our patients and community.”
With this accreditation, YCH not only enhances its reputation but also solidifies its role as a crucial healthcare provider in the region, committed to delivering safe and quality care to its patients.
