Vermillion Fire EMS and LifeServe Blood Center Launch Blood Program
LifeServe Blood Center and Vermillion Fire EMS have announced a significant advancement in pre-hospital emergency care by introducing the first ground ambulance service in South Dakota capable of carrying and administering blood products. This initiative is part of the Blood Out of Hospital Acute Resuscitation (BOAR) program, which aims to fill the critical gap between emergency incidents and hospital treatment.
The collaboration will allow Vermillion Fire EMS to deliver life-saving blood products directly to patients in need, enhancing the quality of emergency medical services in the region. According to LifeServe Blood Center, the largest blood supplier in South Dakota, this program is designed to improve outcomes for trauma patients facing severe blood loss.
Details of the New Initiative
The press conference to unveil the new program is scheduled for February 11, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. This event will take place at Vermillion Fire EMS Station 1, located at 820 N. Dakota St. in Vermillion. During the conference, Vermillion Mayor Jon Cole and LifeServe Medical Director Dr. Alex Smith will provide remarks detailing the significance and expected impact of this initiative.
The BOAR program represents a proactive approach to emergency medical care, enabling paramedics to administer blood products before the patient reaches the hospital. This immediate access to blood can be crucial in stabilizing patients and improving survival rates in critical situations.
Impact on Emergency Medical Services
Implementing the program will not only enhance the capabilities of Vermillion Fire EMS but also serve as a model for other ambulance services across the state. The collaboration is expected to pave the way for similar initiatives in South Dakota, potentially transforming how emergency care is delivered.
LifeServe Blood Center’s involvement underscores its commitment to supporting local emergency services and ensuring that patients receive the best possible care during critical moments. The organization has been instrumental in blood supply management and is poised to continue this trend through innovative partnerships.
As the program launches, community members and emergency responders will be able to see firsthand the benefits of having immediate access to blood products, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes for patients in crises.
