Vanderbilt University Medical Center to Acquire Tennova Clarksville

Leaders at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) have announced plans to acquire full ownership of Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville from Community Health Systems Inc. (CHS). VUMC has held a 20% minority interest in the hospital, its freestanding emergency department, and related physician practices since 2021. The acquisition aims to enhance VUMC’s ability to meet the healthcare needs of patients across the region.
The 270-bed Clarksville facility will join VUMC’s growing network of regional medical centers in Tennessee, which includes Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital in Lebanon, Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital in Coffee County, and Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital in Shelbyville, all of which have been added since 2019. This strategic move aligns with VUMC’s commitment to providing high-quality care in more accessible and cost-effective community settings.
Strengthening Local Healthcare Services
With the acquisition, VUMC aims to expand its range of adult and pediatric services in Clarksville, Montgomery County, and surrounding areas. The organization plans to retain the majority of existing staff at Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville, ensuring continuity in care for patients. Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer of VUMC, emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “Expanding our services in Clarksville allows us to better serve the health care needs of this rapidly growing area.”
The partnership between VUMC and Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville has already seen the introduction of vital services, including an OB-GYN hospitalist program and radiation oncology services through the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The facility also hosts a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing specialized care in collaboration with Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
Future of Healthcare in Clarksville
This acquisition, which is subject to regulatory review, marks VUMC’s fourth regional hospital expansion, further solidifying the organization’s presence in Middle Tennessee. During this transitional phase, patients at Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville will continue to receive uninterrupted care as VUMC and CHS work together to ensure a smooth transition.
Jane Freedman, MD, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer for VUMC, expressed enthusiasm about the integration, stating, “Integrating the Clarksville hospital into our regional network is an exciting step forward. We look forward to collaborating with the dedicated physicians, nurses, and staff to support the community and expand access to care.”
Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville is recognized for its comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services. It has earned designations such as an Accredited Chest Pain Center and a Wound Care Center of Distinction, along with the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission. The facility also operates a freestanding emergency department and multiple physician clinics.
According to the Clarksville Economic Development Council, the city has a population exceeding 200,000 and has experienced a growth rate of 24% over the past decade. This makes Clarksville the fifth largest city in Tennessee, with a strong reputation for ongoing population growth.
As VUMC prepares to fully integrate Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville, the focus remains on enhancing healthcare access and quality for the residents of Montgomery County.
