Therapist Tabitha Johnson Shares Insights for New Year Growth
As the new year begins, many individuals reflect on their past experiences and set goals for personal growth. Tabitha Johnson, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in Las Vegas, emphasizes the importance of envisioning a renewed self. In a recent interview, Johnson shared insights into her own journey, her therapeutic work involving EMDR, and practical tips for sticking to New Year’s resolutions.
Johnson, who has faced numerous challenges throughout her life, recently contributed to the bestselling book “Slaying Vegas.” This work is part of the nationally recognized series “Slay the USA,” which highlights the stories of resilient women. In her chapter, Johnson candidly discusses her personal therapy journey and her decision to begin medication for anxiety. She hopes readers will find inspiration and renewed hope through her experiences.
Addressing Trauma through EMDR Therapy
In her practice, Johnson encounters clients with a variety of challenges, many of whom have experienced significant trauma, often rooted in early childhood. Certified in EMDR therapy, she has found this approach particularly effective for healing trauma. Johnson noted that clients frequently struggle with issues such as communication difficulties in relationships, life transitions, chronic depression, and anxiety.
Johnson’s connection to EMDR therapy deepened after the Route 91 mass shooting, which prompted her and other clinicians to receive training in this specialized method. EMDR focuses on processing specific traumatic memories, and Johnson has witnessed many clients experience a marked reduction in symptoms after just one to three sessions. She shared her own positive outcomes, stating that she no longer suffers from flashbacks and nightmares related to her past traumas.
For those interested in exploring EMDR therapy, resources are available through the EMDR International Association, where individuals can locate certified therapists in their area.
Strategies for Sticking to New Year’s Resolutions
As January unfolds, many individuals set resolutions, yet often struggle to maintain their commitment. Johnson advises against feelings of shame or frustration if progress falters. Instead, she suggests creating a vision board, a visual representation of aspirations that can include goals related to health, wellness, travel, or relationships. This method allows individuals to articulate their intentions creatively.
Another approach Johnson recommends is selecting a “word of the year.” This word can serve as a guiding principle, with options like “calm” or “abundance” helping to focus intentions throughout the year. For those who prefer traditional resolutions, Johnson encourages finding an accountability partner. This supportive relationship can enhance motivation and commitment to personal goals.
Ultimately, the aim is to foster continuous growth and development. Johnson asserts that regardless of the chosen method, the key is to keep moving toward a better version of oneself. As the new year opens possibilities, individuals can take actionable steps to create meaningful change in their lives.
