Tess Holliday Alleges Weight-Shaming Incident on United Flight
Plus-size model Tess Holliday recently shared an unsettling experience aboard a United Airlines flight from Tampa, Florida, where she claims a flight attendant told her to lose weight while traveling with her 9-year-old son. The incident has sparked discussions about body shaming and the responsibilities of airline staff in managing sensitive conversations.
In a TikTok video, Holliday detailed the encounter, stating that it occurred when she went to use the airplane restroom. As she explained to People magazine, “I was in the restroom, and my hip hit the flight attendant call button.” Upon exiting, she reported that the flight attendant initiated a conversation regarding her weight, emphasizing that losing weight would be in her best interest.
The flight attendant purportedly shared a personal anecdote about his sister, whom he described as “very, very large,” and mentioned that she had faced discrimination on a flight. Holliday recounted his comments: “He said that his sister needed to lose weight as well, and that the long-term effect on our bodies isn’t good for our health.” This discussion reportedly lasted for about ten minutes, leaving Holliday in a state of shock.
Holliday noted that this particular flight was significant for her son, marking his first experience flying first class since he was a baby. The model expressed concern about making a scene in front of her child but felt compelled to share her discomfort. “I was also in a state of shock,” she added, highlighting the emotional impact of the interaction.
The flight attendant allegedly remarked that if Holliday truly cared for her son, she would consider losing weight. According to her, he stated, “Because of my size, I am kidding myself if I think that I don’t need to lose weight.”
While some might interpret the flight attendant’s comments as well-meaning, Holliday firmly asserted, “That’s not the point. You don’t say things like that to people.” She emphasized that the conversation was inappropriate and unnecessary.
At the end of her TikTok video, Holliday mentioned that the same flight attendant later approached her seat to offer snacks, reportedly giving her son gummies to prevent him from being “tempted.” This added layer to her experience raised further questions about the staff’s priorities.
After the incident, Holliday reached out to United Airlines and discussed her concerns. She indicated that the airline would address the matter with the team member involved, while also expressing a desire for sensitivity training rather than disciplinary action. “I don’t want anyone losing their job,” she stated, emphasizing the need for awareness.
In response to this incident, United Airlines has yet to provide a public comment. The story has resonated widely, as it highlights ongoing discussions about body image, health, and the role of public service employees in addressing personal topics.
Holliday’s experience serves as a reminder of the importance of sensitivity and respect in all interactions, particularly in environments where individuals may feel vulnerable.
