Superior HealthPlan Invests $700,000 in Hygiene Closets Across Texas

AUSTIN, Texas, July 15, 2025 – Superior HealthPlan has announced a significant investment of $700,000 to enhance its community hygiene closet initiative across Texas. This program, which began in 2020, aims to provide essential personal care items to families in need, ensuring access to necessities such as diapers, deodorant, shampoo, and laundry detergent at no cost.
Since its inception, the initiative has expanded to serve 20 communities statewide, reflecting a growing commitment to support low-income families. According to Susan Mills, senior vice president of population health and clinical operations at Superior HealthPlan, “To date, Superior has provided more than $700,000 in funding to support this important resource in many of the communities we serve.”
The hygiene closets address a critical gap in support for low-income Texans, as personal care items are excluded from coverage under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program acts as a primary lifeline for nearly 3.5 million low-income individuals in Texas, highlighting the necessity of such initiatives.
Expansion and Community Impact
Superior HealthPlan introduced the hygiene closet initiative during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since expanded the program based on positive feedback from communities. The organization collaborates with various local partners to ensure that these closets remain stocked and accessible.
“This community hygiene closet aligns perfectly with our mission to improve the health of moms and babies in East Texas,”
stated Tecora Smith, director of the NET Health Women, Infants and Children (WIC) department in Tyler, Texas. She expressed gratitude for Superior HealthPlan’s support, emphasizing its positive impact on local families.
In 2025, Superior HealthPlan is backing nearly 30 hygiene closets, with locations including Amarillo, Austin, Belton, and San Antonio, among others. The initiative not only provides essential supplies but also fosters community engagement and support in areas where resources are limited.
Commitment to Community Health
For over 25 years, Superior HealthPlan has been dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare services to Texans. With a current reach of 2 million individuals, the organization emphasizes its commitment to transforming community health, one person at a time.
With a workforce of 3,500 employees across all 254 Texas counties, Superior HealthPlan has contributed approximately $11.9 million in grants, sponsorships, and employee giving since 2020, further reinforcing its dedication to supporting low-income communities.
As part of Centene, a leading healthcare enterprise, Superior HealthPlan continues to focus on improving health outcomes for Texans. For more details about the community hygiene closets and schedules, visit the Superior HealthPlan community events page at www.SuperiorHealthPlan.com.
