Rev. Jesse Jackson Hospitalized with Rare Brain Disorder

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a prominent civil rights activist and former Democratic presidential candidate, has been hospitalized for treatment of a rare neurological disorder known as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). The announcement was made by Jackson’s organization, revealing that the 84-year-old is currently under observation in a hospital in Chicago.

According to the statement from Jackson’s organization, he has been living with this neurodegenerative condition for over a decade. Initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, his PSP diagnosis was confirmed in April 2022. The organization expressed gratitude for the prayers and support from the public during this challenging time.

Progressive supranuclear palsy is characterized by its impact on body movements, balance, and eye coordination. The disorder stems from damage to nerve cells in the brain, particularly in areas responsible for thought processes and body movements. As detailed by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, PSP typically manifests in individuals in their mid- to late-60s and often worsens rapidly, leading to significant disability within three to five years of symptom onset. Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment available to effectively halt or slow the progression of PSP, and patients often do not respond well to medications.
