Organ donor registrations are rising in Northeast Ohio, yet the region is grappling with a significant shortage of available organs. Currently, there are **1,192 individuals** waiting for life-saving organ transplants in the area. Nationally, **22.6%** of transplant candidates are Hispanic or Latino, as reported by the **U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health** in 2024. The crisis is particularly pronounced in Ohio, where a spokesperson from **Lifebanc** noted that many on the waiting list are in dire need, especially for kidneys, due to higher rates of diabetes and hypertension among these populations.

Lifebanc, which serves **4.3 million** people across **20 counties** in Northeast Ohio, collaborates with **80 hospitals** and **two transplant centers** to facilitate the recovery and matching of organs, eyes, and tissues. Despite a rise in donations—**493 lives saved** through organ donations and **925 tissue and cornea donations** in the past year—Lifebanc emphasizes that the demand for organs far exceeds supply. This shortfall leads to an average of **20 deaths every day** across the country, underscoring the critical need for more donors.

A single organ donor can save up to **eight lives** and enhance the quality of life for over **100** individuals through tissue and cornea donations. Living donations allow individuals to directly save lives, while donations made after death can establish a lasting legacy that profoundly impacts others.

The story of **Vanessa Silva** highlights the personal dimensions of organ donation. After losing her **9-year-old twins**, Mila and Ray, in a tragic house fire in 2021, Silva faced the heart-wrenching decision of whether to donate her children’s organs. “It was a late night,” she recounted. “My parents were out doing some grocery shopping… My brother came from upstairs and said that he could smell smoke.” The situation escalated rapidly, with the twins rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors informed Silva that there was little hope for their recovery due to prolonged oxygen deprivation.

Despite the devastating loss, Silva chose to continue her children’s legacy through organ donation. “Maybe this was their destiny, their legacy to be able to help other people,” she said. Silva donated her son’s organs and her daughter’s corneas and tissues. “I have always been a firm believer in organ donation, so that was almost like not even a question for me.”

Lifebanc provided timely support to Silva during the donation process, which she described as “the greatest thing.” She reflected on her belief in organ donation: “If you have the power to help somebody else stay alive, why wouldn’t you want to do that? It’s just, for me, basic human decency.”

Thanks to her daughter’s cornea donation, a **7-year-old** child regained the ability to see. Silva expressed the profound emotional impact of this outcome: “It’s such a beautiful thing to know that there are these people out here who are able to live normal lives… Part of them lives on in these people’s lives.”

For those looking to make a difference, registering as an organ donor is straightforward and free. Individuals can say “YES” at the **BMV** when renewing their driver’s license or ID, or register online at **Lifebanc.org** or **RegisterMe.org**. There is no age limit for donors, and most medical conditions do not prevent donations. Final eligibility is determined by medical professionals at the time of donation.

The need for organ donors remains urgent in Northeast Ohio, and each registration holds the potential to transform lives.
