New Report Outlines Path for Healthy Aging in America
A recent report from the Gerontological Society of America provides a comprehensive roadmap for Americans to age with health, wealth, and social equity. Titled “Health and Wealth in the Era of Longevity,” the report emphasizes the importance of competency in several key areas to maximize the benefits of increased life expectancy due to advancements in healthcare and lifestyle improvements.
The report outlines that individuals must make informed decisions throughout their lives to fully embrace older adulthood. It states, “By making sound decisions across the lifespan, individuals can be prepared to fully embrace older adulthood through whatever path they choose.” However, it also stresses the necessity of societal support for aging individuals, highlighting that health, financial, demographic, and social factors will present challenges that can be mitigated through collective efforts.
Building a Supportive Framework for Aging
To address the complex issues of aging, the report advocates for reshaping society to better support an aging population. It suggests promoting financial and longevity literacy, which would equip individuals with actionable strategies starting from birth and extending through young and middle adulthood. This educational approach aims to culminate in a healthier older adulthood, allowing individuals to navigate the challenges that arise as they age.
The report also delves into the intricacies of estimating life expectancy, taking into account variables such as sex, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and education levels. These factors play a significant role in shaping health outcomes for older adults in the United States.
Furthermore, the report calls for modernization of the U.S. healthcare system to meet the growing demands of an aging population. It advocates for specialized training in geriatrics across various healthcare disciplines to ensure that older adults receive appropriate and effective care.
Redefining Financial Security in Later Life
An intriguing concept introduced in the report is “living insurance,” which goes beyond traditional life insurance. This approach aims to provide individuals with the necessary wealth and income to sustain themselves regardless of their lifespan. The report clarifies, “No one can predict the future. However, individuals can take steps to understand their life expectancy and develop the resources needed to make the most of their remaining years.”
As the population of older adults continues to grow, the insights from this report underscore the critical need for both individual and societal preparation. By fostering an environment that prioritizes health, financial literacy, and community support, America can better navigate the complexities of an aging society and ensure that its citizens can age with dignity and security.
