New Mexico House Speaker Pushes for Healthcare Affordability and Reform
New Mexico State House Speaker Javier Martínez is advocating for enhanced healthcare affordability in the state, emphasizing the need for a single-payer system. Martínez discussed the importance of initiatives like the Health Care Affordability Fund during an appearance on “MS NOW Reports.” He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve access to healthcare, particularly through state-level subsidies that complement federal support.
Martínez pointed out that New Mexico has established the Health Care Affordability Fund, which was created in 2021 and is sustained by a surtax on private insurance premiums. This fund currently holds over $100 million. He stated that New Mexico has also implemented state-level subsidies in addition to federal ones, ensuring coverage for diverse communities, including immigrants.
On the program, Martínez remarked, “New Mexico has planned to make the Affordable Care Act better for our communities,” reinforcing the effectiveness of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. He added, “Obamacare works. It’s worked for millions of people over the course of the last ten years.”
Martínez expressed frustration with the lack of action from Congress, particularly referencing the administration under former President Donald Trump and current House Speaker Mike Johnson. He indicated that New Mexico is prepared to cover federal subsidies fully for the remainder of the calendar year and into the next, aiming to make healthcare more affordable for residents.
The Speaker underscored the pressing need to address rising insurance costs, advocating for a single-payer system akin to Medicare for All. He asserted, “That’s why I would advocate for a single-payer system, Medicare for all. That’s what we need to ensure all of us can get affordable healthcare.”
Martínez concluded by stressing the importance of extending subsidies to enhance the affordability of healthcare. “For my constituents and people across the state of New Mexico, I hear that Obamacare is working for them, no question about it,” he stated. He reiterated the necessity of government action to ensure that healthcare remains accessible for all, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges posed by rising insurance premiums.
As New Mexico continues to navigate its healthcare landscape, the Speaker’s proposals reflect a broader discussion on the future of healthcare in the United States.
