Montgomery County Expands Mental Health Facility by 100 Beds
Construction is currently underway on a significant expansion at the Montgomery County Mental Health Treatment Facility in Conroe, Texas. This project will add 100 inpatient beds to the facility, enhancing its capacity to provide competency-restoration treatment for individuals deemed incompetent to stand trial. Officials expect the expansion to be completed by December 2026, with the phased patient intake beginning around February 2027.
On August 18, community leaders and officials marked the groundbreaking of the expansion, which is part of a broader effort to address mental health needs in the region. Currently, the facility operates 100 beds, managed by Recovery Solutions, a behavioral health provider collaborating with Montgomery County and the state through a public-private partnership.
According to Jeff Rone, the Hospital Administrator at Recovery Solutions, this expansion will primarily serve justice-involved individuals who require urgent mental health support. “This expansion should help people get a hospital bed quicker than they have in the past,” Rone stated, emphasizing the importance of timely access to care.
The construction project, contracted to Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, encompasses a 51,085-square-foot addition, which will significantly increase the facility’s reach. The current capacity allows for approximately 3,300 patients from 79 counties, but the new expansion will enable the facility to accommodate 4,300 patients from 140 counties across the state.
In support of this project, the Montgomery County Commissioners Court approved funding of $117,500 on November 18 for commissioning services, which involve testing and verifying new or renovated building systems. This funding will be provided to Smith Seckman Reid Inc., ensuring that the new facilities meet the necessary operational standards.
The expansion is funded through the Texas Health and Human Services’ Mental Health Inpatient Facility Grant Program, highlighting the state’s commitment to enhancing mental health resources. As the project progresses, local officials remain optimistic about its potential impact on mental health treatment accessibility in the region.
