Jersey City Opens New WIC Satellite Clinic to Support Families
Families in Jersey City will soon benefit from enhanced access to nutrition and healthcare services with the opening of a new satellite clinic on October 2, 2023. This clinic is the first of its kind to be established since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to support women, infants, and children through the federal WIC program.
The WIC program provides vital resources, including free healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to essential services. The new satellite clinic will operate every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Metropolitan Family Health Network, located at 935 Garfield Ave. This initiative is part of a collaboration between Jersey City’s WIC program and the health network, which will enable expectant mothers to complete WIC applications and access benefits during their prenatal visits.
Addressing Healthcare Accessibility
Mayor Steven M. Fulop emphasized the significance of the new clinic in promoting equitable healthcare access for all residents. “The new clinic reflects Jersey City’s ongoing commitment to making equitable healthcare more accessible and supportive for every resident,” Fulop stated. He highlighted that the facility will connect families, particularly new and expecting mothers, with the essential care and support they need to maintain their health.
The establishment of this satellite location is designed to alleviate transportation barriers and scheduling conflicts by providing WIC services directly at healthcare facilities where families already seek medical attention. With the addition of on-site obstetrics and gynecology services at the Metropolitan Family Health Network, families can now access multiple essential services in a single location.
Collaboration for Community Health
According to Stacey Flanagan, the director of health and human services, this partnership marks a significant advancement in making health and nutrition resources more accessible. “By working with Metropolitan Family Health Network, we are removing barriers such as transportation and multiple appointments, ensuring families can access the support they need in one trusted location,” Flanagan explained.
The new clinic represents a proactive approach to improving public health within the community, allowing families to receive comprehensive support in an environment tailored to their needs. As Jersey City continues to prioritize health and wellness, this facility is expected to play a crucial role in the lives of many families, enhancing their overall well-being and access to vital resources.
