AMA and Vaccine Integrity Project Establish Independent Review System
The American Medical Association (AMA) has partnered with the Vaccine Integrity Project at the University of Minnesota to create an independent system for reviewing vaccine safety and effectiveness. This initiative emerges in response to concerns regarding the declining trust in the vaccine review process managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The organizations assert that the CDC’s process has “effectively collapsed,” necessitating this alternative approach.
The new system will initially focus on reviewing vaccines for influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as the upcoming fall respiratory season approaches. While the AMA and Vaccine Integrity Project will not make vaccine recommendations, they plan to provide comprehensive evidence reviews to assist state health officials, clinicians, and other decision-makers in vaccine-related choices.
Addressing the Breakdown of Trust
The AMA’s involvement signals a significant shift, as the organization has historically concentrated on issues like physician reimbursement and medical practice economics rather than public health reviews. This decision underscores the seriousness with which medical leaders are responding to the erosion of confidence in the federal government’s vaccine system under the leadership of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Jeanne Marrazzo, Chief Executive of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “It shows the considerable concern around where we are going with evidence-based recommendations.”
For decades, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has set the standards for vaccine recommendations. This panel, comprising outside experts, engaged in thorough data reviews and public discussions prior to making recommendations. However, recent leadership changes have raised alarms in the medical community. In June, Secretary Kennedy dismissed all 17 ACIP members, replacing them with a selected group that includes some known for skepticism towards vaccines.
According to a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), claims regarding the collapse of ACIP’s evidence-based process are “categorically false.” The spokesperson reaffirmed that ACIP remains the United States’ advisory body for vaccine recommendations, driven by “gold standard science.”
Concerns Over Vaccine Recommendations
The recent adjustments to vaccine recommendations have prompted significant backlash. Critics point out that the new ACIP panel has made decisions perceived to be influenced more by ideology than by scientific evidence. For example, the panel voted in December to eliminate the long-standing recommendation for newborns to receive the hepatitis B vaccine.
Michael Osterholm, Director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, described the new initiative as a crucial step to address “a huge black hole in public health and medical practice.” He noted that it is the responsibility of health care professionals to ensure a transparent, evidence-based process for vaccine recommendations.
Sandra Adamson Fryhofer, an AMA trustee and liaison to the CDC vaccine panel, reinforced the commitment to providing clear, evidence-based guidance to the public. “Together, we are committed to ensuring the American public has clear, evidence-based guidance that inspires confidence when making important vaccination decisions,” she stated.
The Vaccine Integrity Project has previously published evidence reviews and convened panels examining scientific studies on vaccines for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV, and is currently conducting a review of the HPV vaccine. This independent initiative aims to restore confidence in vaccine recommendations through a rigorous and transparent review process.
As public health continues to evolve, the establishment of this independent review system by the AMA and the Vaccine Integrity Project could play a critical role in shaping future vaccine policies and restoring trust in vaccination practices across the nation.
