Healthcare Workers Rally in Albany Against Federal Funding Cuts
Healthcare workers from across Western New York are set to travel to Albany on March 4, 2024, to join thousands of colleagues in a protest against significant federal funding cuts that jeopardize hospitals, nursing homes, and essential healthcare services. The event, described by organizers as a “Code Red” for healthcare, aims to prompt state action to address a funding crisis that could lead to the closure of up to eight hospitals in the Southern Tier and the potential loss of approximately 50,000 healthcare jobs across New York State.
The protest is expected to see hundreds of workers departing from various locations in Western New York, including Niagara Falls and Salamanca. According to Shameka Burnett-Matthews, an administrative organizer with 1199 SEIU, the mobilization will begin early on Monday morning, with buses scheduled to leave around 5 a.m. from 2421 Main Street in Buffalo.
Burnett-Matthews emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We want to make our voices heard, make our demands heard and stop the cuts to healthcare.” The Albany event is designed to be both a rally and a march, where participants will not only express their concerns but also unveil a comprehensive plan aimed at securing necessary funding for healthcare.
Following the demonstration, attendees will engage in lobbying efforts directed at elected officials, highlighting the critical nature of healthcare funding in New York. The coordinated effort underscores the solidarity among healthcare workers across the state as they advocate for the preservation of vital services and job security.
As the protest draws near, healthcare professionals remain committed to ensuring that their message resonates with lawmakers and the public. The outcome of this demonstration could significantly impact the future of healthcare funding in New York State, as well as the lives of those who depend on these essential services.
