Florida State University freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard is currently “alert, responsive, and able to communicate” as he continues his recovery from a gunshot wound sustained in August. The incident occurred shortly after the team’s season opener, when Pritchard was shot in the back of the head outside an apartment complex. Following his release from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital on October 12, 2023, he has transitioned to Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville for further rehabilitation.

The university expressed gratitude for the widespread support Pritchard and his family have received during this challenging time. In a statement, Florida State acknowledged the efforts, thoughts, and prayers from the community and urged continued support as Pritchard’s recovery progresses.

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting. According to Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass, Pritchard was not engaged in any wrongdoing at the time of the incident. He was reportedly dropping off an aunt and a child when he was ambushed.

Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young indicated that the shooting appears to have been a case of mistaken identity. This unfortunate circumstance has further intensified the focus on the safety of college students and athletes.

In a heartfelt statement, Earl Pritchard, Ethan’s father, expressed gratitude for the public’s prayers and support. “There have been a lot of ups and downs over these last 39 days, and it is remarkable that Ethan and I were able to leave the hospital together today,” he shared.

The support from the Florida State community has been vital for the Pritchard family. Ethan also expressed his appreciation for FSU head coach Mike Norvell, noting his frequent visits to the hospital. “His players and staff have continued to make us feel part of the team,” Pritchard remarked. “I can’t fully express how much those moments have meant to me and Ethan.”

As Pritchard embarks on this next phase of his recovery at Brooks Rehabilitation, the focus remains on his health and the healing journey ahead. The community continues to rally around him, demonstrating the strong bonds that exist within the world of college sports.
