Sanford Broadway Hospital has introduced a new facility aimed at enhancing the experience of pediatric cancer patients. Cully’s Cottage, unveiled on July 15, 2023, is designed to provide a refuge where young patients can momentarily step away from their medical treatments and engage in play.

The creation of Cully’s Cottage was made possible through a generous donation of $500,000 from the Cullen Children’s Foundation. This new space is part of the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo and features dedicated play areas for children and teenagers, along with a specialized sensory room. According to officials at Sanford, these facilities have quickly become popular among patients, serving as a source of comfort amidst the challenges of their medical journeys.

Creating Moments of Joy

“They’re dealing with some stuff that nobody would want to deal with,” said Matt Cullen, founder of the Cullen Children’s Foundation. He emphasized the importance of creating an environment where children can escape the rigors of hospital life. “To be able to allow them to get away from it all and have some fun with their buddies and family, and just catch their breath, that’s the whole idea.”

Cully’s Cottage is viewed as a sister facility to Cully’s Kids Cabin, which is located at Sanford Children’s Hospital. Both spaces aim to foster a sense of normalcy and joy for young patients, providing them with opportunities to play, relax, and connect with others.

Impacting Lives Through Community Support

The innovative design of Cully’s Cottage prioritizes the emotional well-being of children undergoing cancer treatment. By offering a welcoming and playful atmosphere, it allows patients to temporarily shift their focus from illness to enjoyment. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for holistic care in pediatric oncology, addressing not just the physical but also the emotional needs of young patients.

The Cullen Children’s Foundation has been instrumental in advocating for such supportive environments. With the opening of Cully’s Cottage, they continue their mission to improve the lives of children affected by cancer. The foundation’s contributions represent a significant commitment to community health and wellness, highlighting the role of philanthropy in enhancing patient care.

As the new facility begins to welcome patients, the anticipation and excitement surrounding Cully’s Cottage mark a hopeful chapter in the ongoing battle against pediatric cancer. Families can now look forward to a space where their children can find joy and solace, even in the face of adversity.
