Citizens Medical Center Launches Advanced Mako Robotic Surgery
Citizens Medical Center in Victoria has become the first hospital in the region to introduce the Mako SmartRoboticsTM system to its orthopedic service line. This state-of-the-art technology is now available for Total Knee, Partial Knee, and Total Hip replacements, marking a significant advancement in robotic surgery for local patients.
The integration of Mako SmartRoboticsTM reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing patients with access to innovative surgical options. This technology enhances the existing robotic orthopedic equipment that has been used by the center’s orthopedic surgeons since November 2023. The Mako system employs 3D CT-based planning and AccuStopTM haptic technology, enabling surgeons to tailor surgical plans according to each patient’s unique anatomy. This personalized approach promotes greater precision and accuracy during procedures.
Dr. Ryan Williams performed the first Mako-assisted total knee replacement at the hospital on February 9, 2024. He emphasized the benefits of this technology, stating, “The Mako SmartRoboticsTM technology allows us to perform the procedure virtually first, ensuring optimal implant size, alignment, balancing, and range of motion before making any incision. This level of personalization sets our patients up for the best possible outcomes.”
Numerous studies have highlighted the advantages of Mako-assisted surgeries, including improved bone preservation, reduced blood loss, diminished postoperative pain, and expedited recovery times. Over the past two decades, Mako technology has been utilized in nearly 2 million procedures worldwide, gaining widespread acceptance across major hospital systems and orthopedic training programs.
“We are proud to bring this highly advanced technology to our community,” said Jennifer Mann, Marketing Director for Citizens Medical Center. “Offering Mako SmartRoboticsTM reinforces Citizens Medical Center’s commitment to providing leading-edge care close to home. Our goal is to help patients return to the activities they love with greater confidence and comfort.”
The demand for joint replacement surgeries continues to rise across the United States, with total knee replacements expected to see a significant increase in the coming decade. By investing in advanced surgical technology, Citizens Medical Center is ensuring that community members have access to high-quality orthopedic care without the need to travel far from home.
