Americans Seek Affordable ACA Options Amid Rising Health Costs
As the deadline for enrolling in Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans approaches, millions of Americans face increased premiums and reduced tax subsidies for 2026. Consumers are turning to insurance brokers and ACA marketplace call centers to explore their options amid rising costs. According to Audrey Morse Gasteier, executive director of the Massachusetts Health Connector, many individuals with complex medical conditions are expressing concerns about their access to necessary medical care.
With the January 15, 2026 deadline for plan selection looming, individuals are also considering alternatives outside the ACA. However, the potential for Congress to extend enhanced subsidies appears slim. On December 6, the House passed a conservative-backed package that does not include these subsidies, which many view as unlikely to pass in the Senate. Yet, a bipartisan group of lawmakers aims to facilitate a vote in January on extending these subsidies for three years, a measure that would require Senate approval and the signature of President Trump.
The urgency of the situation is heightened by the fact that open enrollment for coverage starting February 1, 2026, is quickly approaching, and it is already too late for some consumers to secure plans effective January 1.
Evaluating Alternative Options
For those considering plans outside the ACA, several options are available, each with its own set of trade-offs. Short-term insurance plans have gained attention, but experts warn they may not provide adequate coverage. Designed initially for temporary situations such as transitions between jobs, these plans often come with lower premiums but significant limitations. For instance, they can impose annual and lifetime benefit caps and frequently exclude maternity care and prescription drugs.
Joshua Brooker, a Pennsylvania insurance broker, advises consumers to be cautious. “If you’re going to enroll in short-term coverage, you need to know which boxes are unchecked,” he stated. Ronnell Nolan, president and CEO of Health Agents of America, emphasized that these plans are not suitable for everyone, particularly individuals with preexisting conditions.
Another option is indemnity plans, which supplement traditional insurance but do not adhere to ACA requirements. These plans typically cover a fixed amount for hospital stays or doctor visits, leaving policyholders responsible for additional costs. Additionally, faith-based health sharing plans have become more common, pooling member contributions to cover medical expenses. However, these plans lack the guarantees that traditional insurance offers and are not regulated as insurance products.
Understanding ACA Plan Choices and Costs
Consumers who wish to remain within the ACA framework may find that “bronze” or “catastrophic” plans offer the lowest premiums. Jessica Altman, executive director of California’s ACA exchange, noted an increase in bronze-level enrollments. While these plans feature lower premiums, they also come with high annual deductibles, averaging nearly $7,500 nationally, according to KFF.
Recent changes for 2026 have expanded access to catastrophic plans, previously restricted to individuals under 30. These plans are designed for those seeking protection against significant medical events but can also come with high deductibles, potentially reaching the ACA’s limit of $10,600 for individuals and $21,200 for families.
With many individuals losing subsidies due to the expiration of enhanced tax credits, some may find themselves paying significantly higher premiums next year. Lauren Jenkins, a broker in Oklahoma, explained that clients earning less than $25,000 may see their monthly costs rise substantially, making bronze plans an attractive option despite their high deductibles.
Shopping around can also yield savings. Consumers may discover lower premiums by switching to different plans, even from the same insurer. In some cases, “gold” plans may be less expensive than “silver,” depending on the region. Additionally, self-employed individuals with few employees might qualify for group plans that could offer better rates.
Insurance experts advocate for proactive engagement in the enrollment process. Consumers should not postpone until the last minute to gather necessary information and explore their options. The official federal and state ACA marketplace websites provide valuable resources and guidance. It is essential to use the official site, Healthcare.gov, to avoid misleading look-alike sites.
While the future of enhanced subsidies remains uncertain, some assistance will still be available, albeit at reduced levels. The cutoff for subsidy eligibility is set at four times the poverty level, translating to $62,600 for individuals and $84,600 for couples in 2026.
In conclusion, as the deadline for ACA plan enrollment approaches, consumers must navigate a complex landscape of options. Understanding the differences between traditional ACA coverage and alternative plans is crucial in making informed decisions that align with personal health needs and financial situations.
