Wright State University Sees Undergraduate Enrollment Surge 4.7%

Wright State University has reported a notable increase in undergraduate enrollment for the 2023 academic year, with the total number of undergraduate students reaching 7,963. This figure represents a rise of 4.7% from the previous year and demonstrates a 9.4% increase since 2022. Overall enrollment across both the Dayton and Lake campuses has also grown, totaling 11,924 students this fall, reflecting a significant 10% increase since 2022.
The university has welcomed approximately 2,700 new first-time and transfer undergraduate students, alongside 724 new graduate students. In a statement regarding this positive trend, Wright State University President Sue Edwards remarked, “These continued increases in enrollment demonstrate our collective commitment to the students we serve and the transformative power and undeniable value of a Wright State degree.”
Key Factors Behind Enrollment Growth
Among the new undergraduate cohort, 740 students transferred to Wright State this fall, with the Lake Campus experiencing a remarkable increase of over 52% in transfer students. Edwards identified the university’s affordability and strong reputation as critical factors driving this growth. Wright State boasts one of the lowest undergraduate tuition rates in Ohio and was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as the top public university in the state for social mobility in its 2025 America’s Best Colleges rankings.
Edwards emphasized the institution’s dedication to providing an affordable, high-quality education. This positive enrollment news follows other recent achievements for Wright State, including receiving a perfect Senate Bill 6 score from the State of Ohio for the second consecutive year.
Strategic Initiatives and Community Engagement
Wright State has also focused on enhancing its regional impact through partnerships with local organizations such as Premier Health and Dayton Children’s Hospital, as well as ongoing collaborations with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Earlier in 2023, the university launched a five-year Strategic Plan aimed at advancing student success, strengthening collaborative partnerships, and expanding its role as a key driver of economic vitality in the Dayton region.
As Wright State University continues to experience enrollment growth and implement strategic initiatives, it is well-positioned to enhance its educational offerings and regional influence. The university’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to student success promises a bright future for both its students and the broader community.
