Sen. Adam Schiff Engages Students at Woodland Community College

U.S. Senator Adam Schiff visited Woodland Community College on January 22, 2024, to engage with students and tour the campus. His visit highlighted the significant role community colleges play in workforce preparation, educational access, and civic engagement.

Schiff was welcomed by WCC President Lizette Navarette, who provided an overview of the college’s mission and its impact on students from Yolo, Lake, and Colusa counties. Exploring Key Programs and Facilities

During the tour, Schiff explored several of the college’s key programs and facilities. At the WCC Greenhouses, he met with agriculture faculty who emphasized the importance of hands-on, career-technical education and its relevance to the local economy. This interaction highlighted the college’s focus on practical skill development in critical sectors.

Schiff also visited Student Services, where he learned about the comprehensive support offered to students. This includes assistance with enrollment, academic persistence, and achieving educational goals. The senator’s engagement with faculty and campus leaders provided him with insights into the academic programs designed to foster student success.

The tour continued through the Performing Arts and Culinary Center and the eLearning Studio. Here, instructional design faculty showcased the college’s investment in online learning and innovative teaching practices, reinforcing WCC’s commitment to adapting to modern educational needs.

Discussion on Civic Engagement

After the tour, Schiff participated in a discussion with a political science class. He began by reflecting on his background and his service in Congress, including his position as the first California senator in decades to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee. His remarks focused on the responsibilities of public office, emphasizing the importance of upholding the U.S. Constitution and protecting democratic institutions.

The conversation further explored the significance of civic education and informed participation in democracy. Students engaged in a lively question-and-answer session, raising topics such as access to higher education, immigration enforcement concerns, and the protection of democratic norms.
