The V.I. Water and Power Authority (WAPA) has announced the opening of applications for the **2026 Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship Program**, aimed at supporting Virgin Islands students pursuing careers in engineering and related technical fields. This scholarship offers financial assistance that can cover tuition, room and board, books, fees, and supplies, as stated in an official release.

The program is designed to invest in the future of the territory by alleviating financial barriers to higher education for aspiring engineers. According to WAPA, “Over the years, students have returned to serve their community by improving WAPA’s energy infrastructure.” This initiative not only fosters educational growth but also encourages graduates to contribute to the local economy.

Expanded Opportunities for Students

Traditionally, the scholarship has catered to high school seniors, as well as college freshmen and sophomores. This year, it expands its eligibility to include students seeking master’s degrees in engineering. This change allows for greater opportunities for advanced studies and professional development among Virgin Islanders.

The Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship Program offers funding in three distinct categories:

– **Bachelor’s Degree**: Up to **$80,000** available for graduating high school seniors, college freshmen, and sophomores, including those enrolled in or planning to enroll in the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) five-year engineering program.

– **Associate’s/Technical Degree**: Up to **$30,000** for graduating high school seniors aiming to pursue an associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology, electronics engineering, or similar fields. This category also includes individuals planning to attend trade school or obtain certification in a technical discipline.

– **Master’s Degree**: Up to **$60,000** for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution and are enrolled in a graduate engineering program.

Recipients of the scholarships can benefit for a maximum of three years, provided they meet certain criteria. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens and residents of the Virgin Islands, with a clean criminal record. Selection will be based on academic performance, standardized test scores, community involvement, and a panel interview.

Legacy of Alva C. McFarlane

The scholarship honors **Alva C. McFarlane**, who dedicated his career to supporting youth development as the Director of Apprenticeship and Training at the V.I. Department of Labor. His efforts were pivotal in the establishment of this scholarship program, which continues to provide opportunities for young individuals in the Virgin Islands.

WAPA’s commitment to enhancing educational access through this scholarship reflects an ongoing dedication to community development and empowerment. Applications for the **2026 Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship Program** are now open, and interested candidates are encouraged to apply.
