The summer of 2025 proved to be an eventful season for members of the University community, showcasing a diverse range of adventures and achievements. From breathtaking landscapes to international competitions, these experiences highlight the vibrant spirit of the university family.

Memorable Travels and Milestones

Lena Blomkvist, communications manager for the Whitman School, captured a stunning sunset on the west coast of Sweden during her family’s two-week vacation in early July. This picturesque moment serves as a reminder of the beauty found in travel and family time.

In a remarkable journey, Joanna Masingila, a professor of mathematics and education, visited the majestic Victoria Falls in Zambia with her husband, George Nyagisere. Their close encounter with one of the world’s natural wonders occurred in mid-July, offering an unforgettable experience that underscores the allure of international destinations.

Closer to home, Daryl Lovell, associate director of media relations, spent quality time with her family during a road trip near the Virginia-Maryland border. Their destination was Virginia Beach, where they enjoyed the summer sun and family bonding.

Meanwhile, Abby Veccia, a health and exercise science major, proudly represented Team USA in Turin, Italy, during an international baton twirling competition. As the featured twirler for the Syracuse University Marching Band, Veccia’s efforts culminated in her winning a silver medal, a significant achievement that highlights her dedication and talent.

Community Connections and Excursions

Adventure continued with Paula Nelson, assistant teaching professor of visual communications, who spent a month exploring the historic town of Cagli, Italy, with her son, Harry. Their journey was filled with cultural experiences that enriched their understanding of Italian heritage.

On May 25, Andrew Tedesco, a computer science major, captured the exhilarating start of the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event, one of the most prestigious automobile races globally, reflects the excitement and camaraderie within the university community as students participate in various passions.

In a heartwarming scene, Bauer Wimer, the Whitman School’s pet therapy dog, was photographed by his owner, Elizabeth Wimer, assistant teaching professor, as he explored the new chairs on the second floor of the school. This lighthearted moment showcases the importance of community and comfort within the university.

Barbara Jones, professor emerita in the Newhouse School, shared her breathtaking capture of dawn over Anstruther Lake in the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. This tranquil image serves as a reminder of the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Additionally, Dara Harper, communications manager at Hendricks Chapel, visited her son, Rio Harper, in Alberta, Canada. During his time as a Fulbright Fellow focusing on biomedical robotics, they took a trip to Banff in the Canadian Rockies, where they enjoyed hiking and the stunning scenery.

Summer activities also included Erin Smith, internship program coordinator with Career Services, and his wife, Nicole Osborne, participating in the 174th Attack Wing Runway 5K at Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Their involvement in local events not only promotes fitness but also strengthens community ties.

On a cultural exploration, Samuel Gorovitz, professor of philosophy, traveled on a riverboat along the upper Mississippi River on his way to the iconic Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa. His journey reflects a quest for knowledge and the enjoyment of classic American landmarks.

Lastly, Pam Mulligan, executive director of alumni engagement for the northeast, visited the newly opened Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida, with her family. They were joined by a special guest, Toothless from the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, adding a touch of whimsy to their summer outing.
