UC Merced Welcomes Bioengineer David Kaplan for Speaker Series Launch
The Health Sciences Research Institute (HSRI) at UC Merced will officially launch its distinguished speaker series on October 6, 2023, featuring renowned bioengineer David Kaplan from Tufts University. This initiative aims to connect the university’s researchers with the broader community by inviting speakers with significant national and international recognition in their fields.
HSRI Director Professor Deb Wiebe expressed her enthusiasm for the series, noting that it has been a long-anticipated project. “We wanted to bring someone with a reputation whose work spans multiple disciplines,” she stated. Kaplan’s extensive research has included over 700 publications that explore the innovative use of silk as a biomaterial, impacting medicine, agriculture, and food sectors.
Kaplan’s contributions to regenerative medicine have paved the way for advancements in creating replacement organs and other medical technologies. Wiebe highlighted the significance of his work, saying, “It’s easy to underplay the importance of basic scientific discoveries. Kaplan’s research illustrates how complex lab work can lead to real-world solutions.”
The day will not only feature Kaplan’s lecture but also opportunities for interaction. Trevor Hirst, HSRI’s executive director, explained that Kaplan will engage with faculty and graduate students throughout the day, culminating in an evening public lecture at the Merced on Main location. “The lecture will last about an hour, followed by a reception where attendees can meet him,” Hirst noted.
Kaplan is recognized for his exceptional ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in an accessible manner. Hirst compared him to notable science communicators like Bill Nye and Carl Sagan, stating, “He helps audiences understand that science isn’t mysterious – it’s just people, people like them, doing the work.”
The speaker series also aligns with a broader initiative by UC campuses to emphasize the importance of research, especially in light of increasing uncertainty regarding federal funding. Wiebe remarked, “Science matters and it matters a lot. Kaplan’s work exemplifies how lab discoveries can lead to innovations across various fields.”
HSRI envisions this event as the beginning of an annual series designed to bring diverse perspectives to the Merced community. “We aim to identify speakers who, like Kaplan, excel not only in health science research but also in communication,” Wiebe added.
Hirst emphasized the potential for community involvement in shaping future events. “Maybe someone attends this lecture and suggests the perfect speaker for our next event,” he said. For HSRI, the series represents more than just showcasing research; it’s a means to foster connections and engage the community. “We want to welcome anyone interested in science to join the conversation,” Hirst concluded.
As UC Merced prepares for this inaugural event, the anticipation is high for what Kaplan will bring to the university and the broader community.
