As the new year unfolds, the Thompson School District (TSD) is focusing on enhancing student engagement through a variety of extracurricular programs. Superintendent Dr. Bret Heller emphasizes the importance of igniting a love for learning that extends beyond the confines of the classroom. The district is dedicated to providing every student with opportunities to explore their passions, whether in the arts, academics, or athletics.

The district’s mission is more than just academic excellence; it aims to foster an environment where students can discover their interests. Activities such as theater, sports, and clubs serve as the “connective tissue” that keeps students engaged, builds confidence, and cultivates resilience.

Emphasizing Inclusion Through Unified Sports

A significant highlight of TSD’s initiatives is the expansion of its Unified Sports programs, which encourage inclusion among students with and without disabilities. Following the successful launch of Unified flag football and track and field, middle school Unified basketball has transitioned from a pilot to a permanent program this year. Furthermore, Loveland High School introduced Unified bowling in the fall, providing yet another avenue for students to compete together.

The district recognizes that inclusion is crucial not only for athletes but also for fostering a sense of belonging. The more diverse the offerings, the more students can find their niche and thrive both socially and academically.

Expanding Athletic Opportunities

TSD has seen remarkable growth in its athletic programs, with new sports being added to cater to student interests. In 2022, Berthoud girls wrestling was introduced, and the Mountain View girls flag football team celebrated a successful run, finishing as state runners-up after their championship win in 2024. Looking ahead, the district plans to introduce Berthoud girls flag football in the fall of 2026 and will continue its middle school golf pilots this spring.

Beyond sports, TSD is committed to nurturing creativity through its music, theater, and visual arts programs, which are integral to the school’s culture. These activities not only provide students with artistic outlets but also teach discipline and self-expression. Students can also participate in speech, debate, robotics, and various student-led clubs, all of which help them develop skills that may lead to future careers.

The district understands that engagement in these extracurricular activities significantly impacts students’ academic performance. When students feel they belong to a team or a club, they are more likely to attend school regularly and achieve better grades.

Dr. Heller’s vision for TSD is clear: the district will remain proactive in adapting its programs. By listening to students and families, TSD aims to ensure that the opportunities provided reflect the diverse interests of the student body.

As the district continues to innovate and expand, the support of the community remains vital in fostering student passions both inside and outside the classroom. The commitment to creating an inclusive and engaging environment is a testament to TSD’s dedication to the holistic development of its students.
