Springfield Schools Chief to Revive Initiative for Student Success
Springfield Superintendent Sonia Dinnall has announced a strategic initiative to enhance student achievement by reviving the “Portrait of a Graduate” project. In her second state of the schools address, delivered on January 12, 2026, Dinnall emphasized the importance of collaboration among educators, parents, and students to implement this comprehensive framework, which was developed over six years by various stakeholders, including educators, business leaders, and community members.
Dinnall outlined her focus on four key priorities for the school district: improving early literacy, enhancing middle school curricula to provide more engaging and relevant learning experiences, prioritizing career and college readiness, and ensuring that graduates are equipped with the skills necessary for their future endeavors. “We would never disregard the work, the dedication, the wisdom and expertise that went into crafting the Portrait of the Graduate,” she stated. “We are going to strive to distill those two things together; the four new district priorities as well as the Portrait of a Graduate to come up with our new strategic improvement plan.”
The state of the schools event took place at the Cedars Banquet Facility and featured a diverse audience, including college presidents, state legislators, city leaders, and educators. Dinnall used the occasion not just to present plans for the future but also to celebrate past achievements. With a student population of approximately 23,500, she acknowledged both the successes and the challenges faced within the district.
Despite the positive feedback, Dinnall recognized the need for improvement, particularly in standardized testing. According to the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), only 1,717 elementary, 1,018 middle school, and 528 high school students are currently meeting or exceeding expectations. “We need to do better,” she said, encouraging community engagement and support for the importance of the MCAS assessments.
During the event, attendees examined a year’s worth of data on test scores and literacy rates, alongside discussions about challenges such as chronic absenteeism. One educator humorously invited feedback on successful strategies to improve attendance, highlighting the collaborative nature of the event as a work session for educators.
Students showcased their skills aligned with the district’s priorities. Two elementary students read a story, while middle schoolers discussed a program designed to help them create academic plans based on their future aspirations. A high school student presented on career readiness, demonstrating a project from the robotics engineering program.
The keynote speaker, Brandin Stewart, a 2017 graduate of the High School of Science and Technology, shared his journey. Now a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Stewart reflected on the critical role his teachers played in his success. He highlighted the guidance from his counselor, the inspiration from his physics teacher, and the leadership skills imparted by his music teacher.
“What is the most valuable thing Springfield public schools has?” he asked the audience. “It’s you.” His words resonated with the educators present, reinforcing the importance of their roles in shaping the future of students.
Dinnall’s address sets a clear direction for the Springfield school district, merging past initiatives with new priorities to foster an environment where all students can thrive academically and personally. The commitment to innovation in teaching methods and engagement with the community aims to uplift the entire student body and ensure that each graduate is prepared for success in their chosen paths.
