Southern University System Appoints Orlando McMeans as Interim President
The Southern University System Board of Supervisors has appointed Orlando McMeans as the interim president following the dismissal of Dennis Shields last month. McMeans, who has served as the chancellor of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center and the dean of the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences since 2019, will officially assume his new role on January 1, 2024.
This leadership change comes as the board seeks to navigate ongoing transitions within higher education in Louisiana. Shields, who took the presidency in 2022, will step down at the end of the year after the board determined a change was necessary. The decision to appoint McMeans follows an earlier plan to name former U.S. Representative Cedric Richmond to the interim position; Richmond declined the offer citing health concerns.
Ongoing Leadership Changes in Louisiana Higher Education
The Southern University System is not alone in experiencing significant leadership shifts this year. In 2025, three out of four higher education system presidents in Louisiana have left their positions, including William Tate at Louisiana State University (LSU) and Monty Sullivan from the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. Additionally, three top campus leaders have also exited their roles this year, reflecting a broader trend of instability within the state’s higher education landscape.
The board plans to initiate a search for a permanent replacement for Shields in January. This ongoing wave of leadership changes raises questions about the direction and future priorities of the Southern University System and the state’s educational institutions.
As the interim president, McMeans will be tasked with steering the university system during this transitional period. His background in agricultural research and education may offer a unique perspective as the system looks to address challenges and opportunities facing its various campuses.
The appointment of McMeans is a critical moment for the Southern University System as it works to establish stability and continuity in leadership. The board’s decision reflects its commitment to ensuring effective governance, which is essential for maintaining trust and confidence among students, faculty, and stakeholders.
Moving forward, the Southern University System Board of Supervisors will focus on securing a permanent president who can lead the institution into a new era. As the search begins, the board will likely consider candidates who can navigate the complexities of higher education and address the specific needs of the Southern University community.
