Solon High School Launches Junior Jump Start for Future Planning
Solon High School in Solon, Ohio, recently initiated its annual Junior Jump Start program, designed to guide students in their transition to postsecondary education and career opportunities. This initiative is geared towards helping juniors explore various paths such as college, military service, or direct entry into the workforce.
During the program, school counselors introduced students to SchooLinks, the district’s comprehensive college and career planning platform. This resource allows students to investigate potential careers, research colleges, monitor graduation requirements, and maintain updated resumes as they prepare for life beyond high school. According to Ann Trocchio, the director of school counseling at Solon High School, “The goal is to get our students on a jumpstart path to their post-secondary planning.”
As part of the Junior Jump Start experience, students received a checklist detailing essential action items for the months leading up to graduation. This checklist includes attending presentations by college representatives, selecting teachers for recommendation letters, and exploring scholarship opportunities. Trocchio emphasized that the checklist is intended to help students stay organized as they prepare for their senior year.
Recognizing that the planning process can be overwhelming, counselors reassured students of their ongoing support. Trocchio stated, “We acknowledge how they feel and let them know we’re here to guide them all the way.” The counseling team at Solon High School collaborates closely with students and their families throughout their high school journey to ensure they have the necessary information and resources for informed decision-making regarding postsecondary options.
In addition to Junior Jump Start, the district provides various programs aimed at supporting student success. Staff members participated in the event by wearing college and university apparel, fostering discussions around post-high school life. Tamara Strom, the communications director for Solon Schools, noted that the district offers additional opportunities such as ACT preparation nights, financial aid workshops, and career panels, all aimed at both students and their families.
Another significant program is the annual ACT Boot Camp, scheduled for January 10, 2024. This initiative provides students in grades ten and eleven with additional support ahead of standardized testing. Strom highlighted that the boot camp consists of two sessions before the state-mandated test in March, which helps reinforce classroom instruction and enhance students’ test scores. Feedback from previous camps has been overwhelmingly positive, with families appreciating the opportunity for their children.
The ACT Boot Camp will take place from 09:00 to 14:30, with registration starting at 08:00. Participation is not limited, and the program is offered at a minimal cost, with free access available to qualifying juniors through the federal free and reduced lunch program fee waiver.
Through initiatives such as Junior Jump Start and the ACT Boot Camp, Solon High School aims to equip students with the tools needed to explore their options and make informed decisions regarding their futures as they approach graduation.
