Pope’s Words Inspire Local Council Actions and Community Engagement
Pope Leo has encouraged a global reflection on the power of language in his recent Lenten message. He proposed a fast from harmful words that can offend and hurt others, urging individuals to avoid harsh language, slander, and negative commentary, particularly on social media platforms and in political discussions. This call to mindful communication resonates deeply, especially in a world rife with divisive rhetoric.
The Alexandria City Council, meeting on February 23, is actively engaging with the community on various initiatives that reflect this sentiment. The council convenes every second and fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. For those unable to attend in person, meetings are accessible via live stream on the city’s website.
During the recent council meeting, several important updates were shared. Notably, K-9 Izzy has officially joined the Alexandria Police Department. Partnered with Officer Nathan Larson, K-9 Izzy has been trained as a drug detection team and will soon participate in public demonstrations, enhancing community safety and engagement.
The council also discussed progress on the GreenStep Cities program. The local task force has submitted two recent Action Items aimed at achieving Step 3 in this environmental initiative. If accepted by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), Alexandria will be recognized at the League of Minnesota Cities Annual Meeting in June. This recognition highlights the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship and resilience.
As part of future planning, the council is currently recruiting members for the 2026 Task Force. This group will recommend goals and a strategic work plan to foster a more resilient community. Interested candidates must reside within the ALP Utilities service area. Those wishing to express interest can email [email protected] to learn more about how they can contribute.
In a significant civic initiative, the Douglas County Library and the PrimeWest Health Runestone Community Center are advocating for a sales tax referendum. This proposal will be presented to the Minnesota Legislature during the current session. If approved, local voters will have the opportunity to express their views in the upcoming November election.
In light of recent financial challenges, a letter signed by 261 Minnesota mayors has been sent to key state officials. This letter articulates concerns regarding escalating property taxes and unfunded mandates that adversely affect local governments. These mandates, such as the Minnesota Clean Electricity Standard, which requires ALP Utilities to provide 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2040, place additional burdens on municipalities.
The mayor and city council have voiced their commitment to addressing these challenges, emphasizing the importance of both words and actions in shaping community resilience and fostering dialogue. As the council navigates these issues, it remains clear that language has the power to inspire action and effect change within the community.
