This online directory, introduced by the New York City Charter School Center, serves as a comprehensive catalogue of the city’s 281 charter schools spread across over 410 campuses. The initiative aims to streamline the selection process for families navigating the numerous options available in the five boroughs.

The NYC Charter School FINDER enables parents and students to search for schools based on various criteria, including grade level, borough, neighborhood, and community school district. This user-friendly database puts critical information at families’ fingertips. According to James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center, the FINDER is “the most comprehensive database of its kind” in the city. He emphasized the importance of providing families with choices in public education, stating, “With the NYC Charter School FINDER, we’re working to make that choice as easy as possible.”

Expanding Access to Information

Each campus within the directory features its own dedicated page, which includes essential details such as contact information, location, grades served, and a summary of school achievements. This initiative addresses a growing need for transparency and accessibility in the educational landscape of New York City.

As of the 2025-26 academic year, charter schools in New York City serve approximately 155,000 students, accounting for more than 15% of the city’s public school population. Charter schools are tuition-free and offer educators greater flexibility in designing their curricula. Nonetheless, they remain accountable to their authorizers and can be closed if they fail to meet established achievement standards.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, public charter school enrollment more than doubled from 1.8 million to 3.7 million students between 2010 and 2021, reflecting an overall increase of 1.9 million students.
