Merri J. Sanchez Champions Future Aerospace Engineers with Scholarship

Merri J. Sanchez, a Texas A&M University graduate and aerospace engineering pioneer, has made significant contributions to the field while establishing a scholarship to support future engineers. With a career spanning nearly three decades at NASA and a current role as a Technical Fellow at The Aerospace Corporation, Sanchez’s journey reflects her lifelong passion for space exploration.

From Small Town Aspirations to Aerospace Achievements

Raised in rural Colorado, Sanchez found inspiration in the historic Apollo 11 mission, which ignited her dream of working in aerospace. Her parents owned a rock shop, where they became acquainted with Frank Hubert, a former chancellor at Texas A&M. This connection opened doors for Sanchez, leading her to apply to the university. Upon admission in 1981, she received the President’s Achievement Scholarship, which proved pivotal in her academic pursuits.

Sanchez immersed herself in the university community, actively participating in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) as both a member and officer. Reflecting on her experience, she stated, “This organization gave me the opportunity to get to know and work with other students in my major.” Her involvement paved the way for a lifetime membership in AIAA, where she later served in various leadership positions.

A Distinguished Career in Aerospace

After earning her bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M in 1985, Sanchez furthered her education at the University of Houston. There, she obtained a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and planetary geology, followed by a Ph.D. in industrial engineering. During her academic journey, she began her career at NASA, advancing from a vehicle integration test engineer to serving as a liaison for multiple branches of the U.S. military.

Sanchez’s tenure at NASA lasted 28 years, where she gained invaluable experience and insight into the aerospace sector. Following her departure, she continued to influence the industry through various roles, including her current position at The Aerospace Corporation. Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including her induction into the Colorado Space Heroes Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Outstanding Alumni Honor Award from the Texas A&M College of Engineering in 2016.

Sanchez’s commitment to her alma mater is evident in her establishment of the Merri J. Sanchez ’85 Endowed Scholarship. This initiative aims to provide financial support for future aerospace engineers at Texas A&M. “From the moment I graduated, I wanted to give back to the university,” she explained.
