Medina High School Introduces New Courses for 2024 Academic Year
Medina High School in Ohio is set to enhance its curriculum for the 2024 academic year by introducing several new courses that align with the career interests of its students. The school administration, led by Principal Elisa Tedona, has identified eight key career pathways based on feedback from recent graduates. The new offerings will focus on these pathways without necessitating additional staffing or incurring significant curricular costs.
The first new course is an AP Business and Personal Finance class, designed to teach students the fundamentals of business operations and personal financial management. “This course will cover essential principles of business, including how to run a business, market strategies, and leadership skills,” Tedona explained. “Additionally, it will incorporate a personal finance component that addresses income, spending, saving, investing, and credit management.” This will mark the 24th AP course offered at Medina High School.
Innovative Course Offerings Reflect Student Interests
Another significant addition is a hybrid government course. While the school already offers a traditional government class for junior students, this new format will include an asynchronous learning component, allowing for greater independence in study. “We are excited about this development, as recent graduates have expressed a desire for more opportunities that reflect a university-level or career-oriented work style,” Tedona stated.
In response to growing interest in diverse subjects, a unique true crime course will also be introduced. This course aims to engage students through an exploration of true crimes using various media, including books, podcasts, and documentaries. “Students will analyze biases in news reporting, distinguishing between objective and sensationalized narratives,” Tedona noted. This upper-level course will target juniors and seniors.
Additionally, the school is launching a course called Beeline, aimed at freshmen and sophomores. This course will provide insights into various career pathways through guest speakers and self-assessment activities. “Students will discover their strengths and interests, helping them to identify potential career paths,” Tedona explained.
The curriculum will also include a course focused on sports officiating and management. Students will learn the intricacies of officiating various athletic events and managing sports activities. Another offering will be in commercial art graphic design and visual marketing, where students will study graphic arts relevant to the business sector. “These courses have been developed based on direct feedback from students about their interests,” Tedona added.
As Medina High School prepares for the upcoming academic year, these new courses represent a proactive approach to align educational offerings with student interests and career aspirations. By prioritizing student engagement and relevant learning experiences, the school aims to better prepare its graduates for future challenges.
