Local Nonprofit Engages Community in Pacific Marten Conservation
A community science program focusing on the conservation of the Pacific marten is being launched by the local nonprofit organization, Yampatika. The event, titled “Caught on Camera: Using Trail Cams for Science,” aims to educate attendees about this elusive species, a small carnivorous mammal that belongs to the weasel family.
Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the role of “citizen scientists.” This initiative supports both Yampatika and the U.S. Forest Service in their efforts to monitor and study Pacific martens in the region. The program will include a presentation on the ongoing research and will provide insights on how individuals can participate in community science, even from the comfort of their homes.
The event will take place on February 1, 2024, from 13:00 to 14:30 at The Veterans Center, located at 924 Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat Springs. The registration fee is $20, and attendees are encouraged to register online at Yampatika.org/activities.
This program not only highlights the importance of Pacific marten conservation but also emphasizes the role of community engagement in scientific research. By reviewing trail camera footage, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the species and contribute valuable data to ongoing studies.
For those interested in wildlife conservation and community involvement, this event presents a unique opportunity to learn and contribute to the preservation of the Pacific marten in the local ecosystem.
