Islamic Organization Distributes Materials at Texas High School
On February 3, 2026, members of the Islamic organization Why Islam distributed religious materials at Wylie East High School in Wylie, Texas, leading to a review of school policies regarding outside organizations. A district official confirmed the distribution of brochures titled “Understanding Shariah,” along with copies of the Qur’an and hijabs. A video shared on social media depicted the president of the school’s High School Republicans expressing concern over the materials being handed out.
The distribution occurred during lunch, and according to the official statement provided to the Daily Caller News Foundation, approximately four women from the organization were present. The statement clarified that less than 50 students approached the table, with most taking candy. A limited number of students engaged further, with about a dozen trying on scarves or hijabs, while approximately four received henna designs.
District Response and Policy Review
The district emphasized that the organization did not have permission to distribute materials on the school campus. An official noted, “Outside organizations are not permitted to distribute materials to students without prior approval from campus and district administration.” The protocols aim to protect the educational environment and ensure parents are informed about what their children encounter during school hours.
The official further stated, “This situation is not about religion, politics, ideology, or any personal belief system. It is about a procedural breakdown.” They acknowledged that mistakes were made and expressed a commitment to addressing the oversight. The district is currently reviewing its internal procedures and staff oversight concerning guest approvals and student clubs to prevent future incidents.
Mission of Why Islam
According to its website, Why Islam aims to provide accurate information about Islam, a faith followed by over 1.6 billion people worldwide. The organization seeks to dispel stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims, highlighting its commitment to education and outreach.
As of now, Why Islam has not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident at Wylie East High School. The situation has raised significant discussion among parents and community members about the role of outside organizations in public education and the adherence to established protocols regarding student engagement.
