Hudson ISD Achieves Perfect Financial Score, Introduces New Policy
The Hudson Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees announced a perfect financial accountability score and discussed a new policy aimed at improving the reintegration of students returning from mental health treatment. During the meeting on October 5, 2023, Assistant Superintendent Barrett Lankford confirmed that the district received a score of 100, classified as “Superior” by the Texas Education Agency. This rating represents the highest accolade for financial integrity, evaluating 21 indicators such as audit compliance and administrative spending.
Superintendent Scott Martindale highlighted the district’s strong fiscal health, noting that Hudson ISD boasts 232 days of cash on hand and a low administrative cost ratio of 0.07. “There’s a very small percentage that is still scoring 100,” he remarked. “So to have a hundred is really something great to have—there are very few districts in Texas with that distinction.”
New Policy for Student Reintegration
Trustees also reviewed a proposed policy aimed at facilitating safer transitions for students returning from residential or mental health facilities. School Psychologist Alyssa Grissom expressed concerns about students re-entering classrooms without the necessary medical releases or discharge paperwork. This lack of documentation can lead to significant gaps in safety and communication between families and school staff.
The proposed policy would mandate a doctor’s release or discharge summary, allowing up to 72 hours for staff to review the documents before a student’s return to class. Grissom emphasized the importance of this waiting period: “If that student is going to have a relapse after being discharged, it’s within the first 48 hours of being discharged home. In addition, whenever a student enters an inpatient facility, you can bet their medications will be changed. This allows the parent to get their prescription filled and provide our nurses with the new medication for review to ensure safety before they come back.”
Capital Projects and Student Engagement
The board also approved $1.68 million in capital projects, which will be funded through the district’s fund balance. The projects encompass multiple improvements, including the purchase of two new school buses, one specially adapted bus, HVAC replacements at the high school, upgrades to the network and phone systems, roof replacements for the high school and band hall, as well as fencing and drainage repairs.
Additionally, students from W.H. Bonner Elementary participated in the meeting by presenting a Progressive Learning showcase. They shared classroom projects created using Canva, highlighting the innovative ways teachers encourage creativity through digital learning tools. The board also received updates on digital learning programs and the district’s Emergent Bilingual/ESL progress report, which indicated strong performance among students who have recently exited language services.
Overall, the Hudson ISD Board of Trustees demonstrated a commitment to maintaining high financial standards while also prioritizing the mental health and safety of its students through new policies and ongoing educational initiatives.
