Henry S. Bienen Returns as Interim President of Northwestern University

Northwestern University has appointed Henry S. Bienen as interim president, effective September 16, 2023. This decision follows the recent announcement of Michael Schill‘s resignation after serving since 2022. The Board of Trustees expressed confidence in Bienen’s leadership, citing his extensive experience and deep connection to the university.

Bienen’s Legacy and Vision

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Peter Barris, highlighted Bienen’s profound knowledge of Northwestern, stating, “We believe Henry is uniquely suited to follow President Michael Schill’s tenure and continue to support the University.” Bienen previously served as Northwestern’s 15th president from January 1995 to August 2009, during which time he significantly enhanced the institution’s academic standing, financial health, and research capabilities.

Under Bienen’s leadership, Northwestern saw remarkable achievements, including a fivefold increase in its endowment and a surge in applications for admission. Faculty and students garnered numerous prestigious awards, further elevating the university’s reputation on both national and international stages.

In his statement regarding his return, Bienen expressed gratitude and a commitment to navigating the challenges faced by research universities. “I am honored to be asked to serve Northwestern again, and I look forward to helping the University I love so dearly,” he said. Bienen emphasized the resilience of Northwestern and its potential to positively impact lives through education and research.

Transition of Leadership

Bienen’s interim presidency comes as Northwestern prepares for a future without Schill, who oversaw significant advancements across the university’s three campuses, including record fundraising and improved national rankings. After a sabbatical, Schill intends to return as a faculty member at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.

The Board of Trustees plans to provide updates to the university community regarding the selection process for the next permanent president. Barris assured stakeholders that he will work closely with Bienen to support the university’s faculty, staff, and students, ensuring the continuation of its diverse research initiatives.

Bienen, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has an extensive background in higher education leadership and policy. He has held positions on various boards, including the Council on Foreign Relations and the Chicago Board of Education. Before leading Northwestern, he was the dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.

In addition to his academic roles, Bienen served as president of the Poetry Foundation from 2015 to 2020. His contributions to education and the arts are well recognized, including the naming of Northwestern’s School of Music in honor of him and his wife, Leigh Bienen, a senior lecturer emerita at the Pritzker School of Law.

Reflecting on the changes at Northwestern since his last presidency, Bienen noted the significant expansion of the university’s research portfolio and physical footprint. “The growth in the medical school, medical research, and research funding has been truly impressive,” he remarked.

Bienen acknowledged the university’s commitment to a well-rounded education, emphasizing its strengths across various disciplines. “I think the community is deeply proud of that,” he said, highlighting Northwestern’s ability to excel in the sciences, engineering, business, and the arts.

Living near the Chicago campus, Bienen expressed his appreciation for the vibrant culture and opportunities the city offers. He underscored his dedication to Northwestern, stating, “I care a great deal about this University. It’s been a huge part of my life since I arrived in 1995.” His commitment to maintaining Northwestern’s excellence across all areas of study will guide his interim leadership as the university embarks on a new chapter.
