The Fargo Youth Initiative has officially transitioned from city oversight to being housed under the Fargo Public Schools, a move aimed at enhancing student civic engagement. On December 22, 2023, the Fargo City Commission voted to grant this advisory body, composed of local high school students, oversight by the school district. This decision follows a series of discussions regarding the effectiveness of various boards within the city structure.

The initiative, which was previously coordinated by the city’s Planning Department, is expected to expand its reach and impact. According to Commissioner Denise Kolpack, “It really did take a village to find a new home for this, but I think it’s the next iteration of greatness.”

Students involved in the Fargo Youth Initiative have expressed a desire to be part of the decision-making process affecting their lives. Isabella Meyer, chair of the initiative and a senior at Fargo North High School, noted the importance of youth voices in civic matters. “The Fargo Youth Initiative has been a great way for us to be able to share our voice and our opinions on what actually works and what we actually need,” Meyer stated during the commission meeting.

New Structure and Focus Areas

The restructured Fargo Youth Initiative will now include liaison representatives from the Fargo City Commission, the Fargo School Board, and the Fargo Park Board. This arrangement allows for a collaborative approach to addressing issues pertinent to youth in the community. Meetings will take place at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley, which will also provide administrative support.

Robin Nelson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs and vice president of the Fargo School Board, has been involved with the initiative since its inception in 2013. She emphasized the importance of connecting high school students with local governmental representatives. “Now that they’ve got some more direction, it’s really ignited their excitement,” Nelson remarked.

The initiative’s proposed focus areas include education on the North Dakota Century Code, local governance, and open meeting regulations. Additionally, advocacy efforts will center around public health issues affecting youth, homelessness, and engagement with city policies and initiatives.

Goals and Community Engagement

The Fargo Youth Initiative aims to recruit a total of 15 members, with plans for monthly meetings to maintain engagement and progress. Proposed community impact projects may involve organizing student-led events or service initiatives and participating in local government meetings.

Nelson highlighted the significance of involving youth in local governance. “Youth are a big percentage of our population, so the more they can learn about how our city governments work and serve as a conduit and voice for youth so they are heard at those elected levels, is beneficial,” she stated.

The transition of the Fargo Youth Initiative to Fargo Public Schools marks a pivotal moment in fostering civic engagement among young people in the community. By providing a structured platform for youth voices, the initiative not only empowers students but also aims to create positive change within the city.
