FALA Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage with Day of the Dead Event
Students at the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA) organized a vibrant Day of the Dead celebration on October 4, 2023, as part of Hispanic Heritage Month festivities. This event was spearheaded by members of the newly established LUNA club, which has rapidly expanded to include 12 members since its inception this school year.
The LUNA club, focused on promoting Latinx culture and heritage, aims to foster a sense of community and understanding among students. At the Day of the Dead celebration, attendees engaged in various activities, including traditional arts and crafts, storytelling, and a display of altars honoring deceased loved ones. The event not only highlighted the cultural significance of this holiday but also encouraged students to embrace and share their own heritage.
According to FALA faculty advisor, Maria Gonzalez, the LUNA club was formed to give students a platform to celebrate their culture and educate others. “We wanted to create a space where students can express themselves and learn about the rich traditions of the Hispanic community,” she explained.
The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2, honoring deceased family members. It is characterized by colorful decorations, sugar skulls, and offerings placed on altars. The FALA event provided an opportunity for students to learn about these traditions while actively participating in the celebration.
As part of their efforts, the LUNA club plans to host more events throughout the month, aiming to raise awareness and appreciation for Hispanic culture within the broader school community. This initiative not only highlights the importance of cultural representation but also encourages inclusivity and dialogue among students of diverse backgrounds.
The celebration at FALA reflects a growing trend in schools across the country to recognize and honor cultural heritage months, fostering an environment where every student feels valued and heard. As the LUNA club continues to grow, it will play a crucial role in promoting understanding and respect for Hispanic and Latinx cultures at the academy.
