FALA Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage with Day of the Dead Event
Members of the newly formed LUNA club at Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA) organized a vibrant Day of the Dead celebration on October 25, 2023. This event coincided with Hispanic Heritage Month and aimed to honor cultural traditions while fostering community engagement among students.
The LUNA club, founded by a pair of enthusiastic FALA students at the beginning of the 2023 school year, has quickly gained momentum, expanding its membership to 12 individuals. The group focuses on promoting awareness and appreciation of Hispanic culture through various activities and events.
The Day of the Dead, a significant Mexican holiday, celebrates the lives of deceased loved ones, blending joyous remembrance with traditional rituals. The FALA event featured colorful altars, displays of traditional foods, and opportunities for attendees to learn about the history and significance of the holiday.
Maria Gonzalez, a co-founder of the LUNA club, expressed her excitement about the event’s success. “We wanted to create a space where our peers could learn about our traditions and celebrate them together,” she stated. The celebration attracted students, faculty, and families, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity.
In addition to honoring the Day of the Dead, the LUNA club has plans for future events that will further highlight Hispanic culture. They aim to host workshops, film screenings, and discussions to educate the FALA community.
The club’s initiatives have received positive feedback from both students and staff, emphasizing the importance of representation and cultural awareness in educational environments. As the LUNA club continues to grow, its members are hopeful about making a lasting impact on their school community.
FALA’s commitment to celebrating diversity through events like the Day of the Dead is a testament to the school’s broader goals of fostering an inclusive and enriching educational experience. By engaging students in cultural celebrations, FALA aims to prepare them for a diverse world while encouraging respect and understanding among peers.
As activities for Hispanic Heritage Month conclude, the LUNA club is already looking ahead, planning to make its mark through future celebrations and initiatives that promote education and cultural exchange.
