The Durango High School boys basketball team achieved a narrow victory against Pagosa Springs, winning 50-45 during their home opener on March 5, 2024. The Demons relied heavily on their defensive performance, particularly in the final moments of the game, to secure the win.

Despite lacking height and size this season, Durango showcased their athleticism throughout the match. They capitalized on numerous turnovers by Pagosa Springs, converting defensive stops into offensive opportunities. Junior guard King Kerlin played a pivotal role, making a crucial steal and helping the team maintain possession in the closing moments.

Head coach Alan Batiste expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “We had a long weekend, so it was good for the boys to get a win. That was a good win to be able to go into league and be ready to go.” Following this victory, Durango improved its overall record to 4-6, rebounding from two previous losses by an average margin of 18 points.

Kerlin led the Demons with 12 points, while junior Boaz Zastrocky contributed 10 points. On the opposing side, senior guard Creede Dozier was the standout player for Pagosa Springs, finishing the game with 14 points. This loss left the Pirates with a record of 2-7.

The game kicked off with high energy from both teams and their supporters. Early in the first quarter, Durango established a lead with strong defensive plays. Batiste scored five quick points, and Kerlin’s step-back three-pointer pushed the Demons ahead to a 10-6 advantage with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The team’s defensive intensity was palpable, resulting in a 16-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.

“Our defense is amazing; I’m really proud of our defense,” Batiste commented. “We’re just trying to focus on the offense. That’s been our nemesis.” The Demons continued their strong start, extending their lead to 23-10 midway through the second quarter. Their ability to hit outside shots while forcing turnovers contributed to a solid performance.

Pagosa Springs adjusted their strategy after halftime, switching to a zone defense that initially disrupted Durango’s rhythm. The Pirates managed to reduce the deficit, with an old-fashioned three-point play bringing the score to 28-24. Batiste acknowledged this shift, noting, “We struggled a little bit… I didn’t see that coming.”

Despite the challenges, Kerlin responded effectively, penetrating the zone and converting key opportunities. By the end of the third quarter, Durango maintained a 38-30 lead. However, Pagosa Springs began to find success, particularly through Dozier, who facilitated scoring opportunities and connected on a three-pointer that narrowed the gap to 41-39 with just under four minutes to play.

With the game tied at 43 and less than two minutes remaining, Durango opted for an aggressive approach instead of holding the ball. Although they missed a three-pointer, they secured the offensive rebound and went to the free-throw line, ultimately sealing their victory.

As the Demons prepare for their next game against Grand Junction Central on March 8, 2024, they will aim to build on this hard-fought win while continuing to address their offensive challenges. Batiste emphasized the importance of protecting the ball and reducing turnovers, particularly as the team navigates the season with a youthful roster.
