Detroit Students Craft Unique Furniture, Build Skills for Future
High school students in Detroit are gaining invaluable hands-on experience by designing and constructing unique furniture items through a program offered by Atlantic Impact. This initiative not only teaches carpentry and design skills but also fosters critical problem-solving abilities among the young participants. As they create one-of-a-kind pieces, these students are preparing for careers beyond traditional academic pathways.
Hands-On Learning Transforms Futures
According to Nino Tanzini, the lead instructor for Atlantic Impact, the program provides students with a clear vision of their potential career opportunities. “This has opened up the door for them to see that there is a career for them, not everyone is going to go to college,” he stated. Tanzini emphasizes that the process encourages creativity, with students learning to cut, sand, and stain wood to achieve their desired outcomes.
Each furniture project requires considerable time and effort, often taking days or even longer to perfect. The moment students complete their work is significant. “You see that little thing click in their head, ‘Man, I really did this, someone really cares about what I did,’” Tanzini added. This realization serves as a rewarding aspect of their learning experience.
Entrepreneurship and Community Engagement
The program also nurtures entrepreneurship skills. Students are preparing to sell their crafted furniture to the local community, allowing them to build relationships and networks. Ashley Sigala, a graduate from Hope of Detroit, remarked, “Building your communications with people, you build bonds with people. Some of these people that buy stuff might come back or have recommendations on us building something for them.”
Beyond the educational benefits, students find joy in their work. Sigala expressed her happiness, reflecting on the transformation from plain wood to a finished product. “There’s so many emotions. I feel happy. I remember when it was just plain wood,” she said, highlighting the satisfaction derived from the creative process.
The initiative not only enhances students’ practical skills but also instills confidence and a sense of accomplishment. As they prepare for future endeavors, these five apprentices are ready to take on new challenges, equipped with the knowledge and experience gained from this enriching program.
