Columbia College Offers Tuition Support for Military Students
Columbia College in Missouri has launched a new initiative to assist military students as the federal government shutdown continues. The “You Stand For Us, We Stand By You” program, announced on October 16, 2023, aims to provide financial relief to active service members, reservists, and National Guard members who may be affected by the ongoing budget impasse.
The college’s program comes at a crucial time, as military personnel could potentially miss a paycheck as early as October 18, 2023, if Congress does not reach an agreement on funding. Columbia College President David Russell, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, emphasized the importance of supporting those who serve. “Service members have stood in harm’s way for us countless times. When they need us, we must answer the call,” he stated.
Tuition Assistance Details
Under the new program, affected military students will receive full tuition coverage for the fall semester, which concludes on December 13, 2023. This assistance will be provided upon verification of their current military status. Additionally, new military students enrolling at Columbia during the shutdown will be eligible for the same support. The initiative also extends to those who have had to drop courses due to financial worries stemming from the shutdown.
Columbia College has a long history of being military-friendly, with approximately 34,000 of its alumni comprising veterans, active-duty service members, or military family members. The establishment of this program reinforces the college’s commitment to supporting its military community during challenging times.
Students seeking assistance can reach out to the Ousley Family Veterans Service Center, which is dedicated to providing resources and guidance to military students. This initiative not only reflects Columbia College’s dedication to education but also its recognition of the sacrifices made by service members.
In a time of uncertainty for many, Columbia College’s proactive approach provides hope and support, ensuring that military students can continue their education without the burden of financial stress caused by the shutdown.
