Carter County Schools in Tennessee announced the closure of classes earlier this week due to hazardous winter weather conditions. On January 15, 2024, the school system shared images on Facebook illustrating the treacherous road conditions in higher elevations, which played a significant role in the decision to cancel classes.

In a statement, Brandon Young, the public relations coordinator for Carter County Schools, explained that the district strives to keep parents informed about the factors influencing such decisions. “We often receive questions, especially when the weather appears clear in lower elevations,” Young noted. “It’s important to understand that our weather can vary greatly depending on elevation.”

To assess road conditions, representatives from the school district actively drive through various parts of the county. The school system collaborates with the Emergency Medical Association and the National Weather Service to evaluate forecasts and determine the safety of travel for students and staff. Young emphasized that decisions regarding closures or delays are made with careful consideration.

“We do not make decisions haphazardly,” Young stated. “We only proceed with a closure when we believe the safety of our faculty, staff, and students is at risk due to the weather.”

While keeping students in school remains a priority for the district, safety is paramount. “Erring on the side of caution is essential when it comes to the lives of children,” Young added. “Our top priority is the well-being of our students and staff.”

To mitigate potential learning loss during closures, Carter County Schools have implemented virtual learning assignments for students on days when classes are canceled.
