BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Public schools in Bexar County are grappling with significant financial challenges as a new year unfolds. Declining student enrollment and budget shortfalls have put pressure on local districts, prompting discussions about potential school closures and property sales.

On Monday, the Judson Independent School District (ISD) board will review the results of a school consolidation vote, as the district faces a substantial $18 million budget shortfall. Among the critical items on the agenda are the potential closure of two elementary schools and a middle school, alongside the elimination of a Spanish immersion program. Prior to these discussions, the Judson ISD board will hold a special meeting on Saturday to address the future employment of the superintendent.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is also set to convene on Monday. The school board will consider moving the general elections of trustees from May to November, following a similar decision made by the City of San Antonio in December 2024. Another pressing issue for SAISD is the possible closure of Carvajal Elementary School for the upcoming academic year, along with proposed changes to programs at Smith Elementary School.

The challenges facing SAISD are not new. In 2024, the district closed 15 campuses. Over the past year, community meetings and panels have aimed to address the fate of these vacant buildings. In the fall, SAISD initiated a bid process for tenants interested in leasing the district’s empty properties.

In December, the board reviewed several proposals, including those from developers seeking to create affordable housing. The SAISD board has since approved a recommendation to formally notify Brass Development to proceed with plans to lease the former Brewer Academy, which is set to be transformed into 80 affordable housing units.

In addition to leasing efforts, district staff are moving forward with a sealed bid process to sell the properties where Pickett and Gonzales Elementary Schools once operated. SAISD has indicated that the land is no longer viable for school use.

The board meeting on Monday will begin at 17:30 local time, and it is expected to draw significant attention from the community as the future of several schools and properties hangs in the balance. As these discussions unfold, the impact on students and families in Bexar County remains a critical concern for local leaders and stakeholders.
