4-H Speech Contests Thrive as AgTrust Farm Credit Celebrates Milestone
The annual 4-H speech contests, sponsored by AgTrust Farm Credit, have successfully expanded access to agricultural education for youth in New Mexico. This year marked the fifth installment of the contests at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Alongside events at the New Mexico State Fair and the Southern New Mexico State Fair, the contests have awarded over $100,000 in scholarships since their inception.
These contests provide a unique opportunity for children who may not have the means or resources to participate in traditional agricultural projects, such as raising animals. By selecting topics of personal interest related to agriculture, participants can engage in speech competitions or science fairs. This approach is crucial, considering that only about 1% of the population lives on a farm, yet more than 10% are employed in the agricultural sector.
Connecting with Future Leaders in Agriculture
The contests serve as a vital link for aspiring agricultural professionals, regardless of their backgrounds. According to a representative from the Agricultural Economics & Agricultural Business Department, the initiative allows young people to connect with agricultural careers, whether they hail from Tatum, a rural town, or Roswell, a more urban environment.
Participants not only gain valuable experience but also refine their skills. Many use their speeches or projects as preparation for competitions at the National 4-H or Future Farmers of America (FFA) conventions. The emphasis is on personal development, with the understanding that skills gained will benefit them throughout their professional lives.
Gratitude for Support and Future Aspirations
The success of the contests is attributed to the dedicated support from AgTrust Farm Credit, the ENMSF Board, and the Contest Superintendent, Kathryn Vaz. Their commitment has been instrumental in creating and sustaining these opportunities for youth.
As the contests continue to evolve, the focus remains on fostering a passion for agriculture and equipping young individuals with skills that will serve them well into adulthood. The ongoing support from local organizations ensures that these contests will continue to thrive, making a lasting impact on the community and the agricultural industry as a whole.
