The 47th annual Tony Dolan Family Memorial Ski for Cancer benefit is set to take place on January 31, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Westline Inn. This long-standing community event invites skiers, snowshoers, and local residents to come together in support of a cause that honors the memory of loved ones affected by cancer.

Participants can look forward to a day filled with activities, including skiing, snowshoeing, and indoor festivities, ensuring there is something enjoyable for everyone. The event features a large bonfire for warmth, live music by local band Connor and Noah, and a variety of food options available for purchase, such as a pig roast and sausage sandwiches.

Funds raised from the event will benefit Kids and Cancer, an organization dedicated to supporting children facing serious illnesses and adults diagnosed with cancer. Board member Dorie Meabon, a cancer survivor herself, expressed gratitude for the trust the Dolan family has placed in the new organizers. “Every year, we get new orders for memorial trail signs, and it seems like more people know about the event,” Meabon noted, emphasizing the community’s shared experience with cancer.

The memorial trail signs serve as a poignant reminder of the impact cancer has on families. “You really come to understand that cancer has touched so many people and families locally,” Meabon stated. While trail sign orders for this year have closed, submissions are already being accepted for next year’s event.

The Ski for Cancer benefit is not solely about skiing; it embraces a spirit of community. Laurie Ludwig, another board member, recalled a previous year with no snow, yet attendees still enjoyed the day’s activities. “People can walk the trails if they want to, or not go outside at all if they don’t like the cold,” she explained. “This is a party with something for everyone.”

Guests can also participate in a 50/50 raffle for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses, including a custom knife from W.R. Case and Sons, a pedal bike from Just Riding Along, and snowshoes from Jamestown Cycle Shop. The Zonta Club of Bradford will provide baked goods, which have become a favorite among attendees over the years. “Those ladies do a great job every year, and we sure appreciate them,” said board member Jim Copeland.

The event relies on the support of the Tuna Valley Trail Association, which maintains the trails used during the benefit. Copeland acknowledged their critical role, stating, “They help us out year after year by letting us use their trails and keeping those trails clear and beautiful for our event. This event wouldn’t be possible without them.”

One distinguishing feature of the fundraiser is its local focus; all proceeds remain within a 100-mile radius. Funds are distributed annually to support children and adults facing cancer diagnoses or related initiatives.

To participate in the 47th annual Ski for Cancer benefit, interested individuals can register online at www.kidsandcancerbenefitrun.com. Paper registration forms are also available at various local locations, including Ott & McHenry Pharmacy, Evergreen Elm, and YWCA Bradford. This community gathering not only honors those affected by cancer but also strengthens the bonds among residents through shared experiences and support.
