AI Revolution: Anthropic’s Claude Code Set to Disrupt US Jobs
A prominent engineer at Anthropic has issued a stark warning regarding the impact of advanced AI agents on computer-based jobs across the United States. Boris Cherny, the creator of **Claude Code**, expressed that these AI systems are maturing rapidly and will soon transform the responsibilities of numerous roles, including software engineers, product managers, and designers.
Cherny made these comments in a recent interview on “Lenny’s Podcast,” hosted by **Lenny Rachitsky**. He emphasized the impending shift, stating, “It’s going to expand to pretty much any kind of work that you can do on a computer. In the meantime, it’s going to be very disruptive. It’s going to be painful for a lot of people.” The implications of this shift are significant, as it suggests that many existing job titles may not survive the next few years.
As part of its latest advancements, Anthropic recently released the **Opus 4.6** update for Claude Code. Unlike traditional chatbots that merely generate text or images, Claude Code is designed to operate digital tools autonomously. This includes executing commands, analyzing documents, messaging colleagues, and even building websites. Cherny noted that while Claude Code is not yet at the level of a skilled human operator, its capabilities are evolving to mimic human-like interactions with technology.
Cherny highlighted that his team has already begun to experience increased productivity, attributing this rise to the integration of AI tools. He mentioned that the productivity per engineer has improved significantly since the launch of Claude Code. Looking ahead, he predicts that the job title of software engineer may “go away” by **2026** due to the increasing capabilities of AI.
The broader societal implications of these changes remain uncertain. Cherny remarked, “As a society, this is a conversation we have to figure out together. Anyone can just build software anytime.” His advice to workers facing this transition is straightforward: engage with AI tools and understand their functionalities. “Don’t be scared of them,” he advised.
The rapid progression of AI technology, exemplified by the advances in Claude Code, raises important questions about the future of work. As organizations increasingly adopt these tools, workers across various industries must adapt to the evolving landscape. Cherny’s insights serve as a reminder of the potential disruptions and opportunities that lie ahead in an increasingly automated world.
