Yasa’s New Electric Motor Sets Record with Unmatched Power Density

A groundbreaking axial flux electric motor developed by UK-based Yasa has set a new unofficial power density record, showcasing remarkable advancements in electric vehicle technology. The newly designed prototype, which weighs just 28 pounds (12.7 kilograms), generates a peak power output of 750 kilowatts (1,005 horsepower), exceeding the power of two Tesla Model 3 Performance vehicles combined.
This innovative motor outstrips the previous record holder, also from Yasa, by an impressive 40%. The prior model achieved a peak power of 550 kW (737 hp) and weighed 28.8 lbs (13.1 kg), resulting in a power density of 42 kW/kg. In contrast, the latest prototype boasts a record-breaking power density of 59 kW/kg, making it nearly eight times more potent than the rear electric motor of the recently introduced Tesla Model Y Standard, which is rated at 200 kW (268 hp) in Europe.
Performance and Scalability
While peak power is critical for short bursts of acceleration, continuous power output is equally vital for sustained performance. Yasa’s new motor can continuously deliver between 350 and 400 kW (469 to 536 hp). This capability enhances the motor’s applicability in electric vehicles, making it a strong contender for future automotive innovations.
Importantly, Yasa emphasizes that the axial flux motor is scalable and utilizes no exotic materials, allowing for potential mass production in response to market demand. According to Joerg Miska, CEO of Yasa, “This record demonstrates what makes Yasa unique. With three times the performance density of today’s leading radial flux motors, Yasa continues to redefine the boundaries of what’s possible in electric motor design.”
Implications for Electric Vehicles
The lightweight nature of Yasa’s motor holds significant implications for electric vehicle range and efficiency. A lighter motor means that vehicles can travel the same distance with a smaller battery, leading to reduced charging times and improved overall performance. As the automotive industry increasingly prioritizes sustainability and efficiency, innovations like Yasa’s axial flux motor could play a crucial role in shaping the future of electric propulsion systems.
Currently, Yasa’s axial flux motors are utilized in high-end vehicles, including the Lamborghini Temerario and Ferrari 296 GTB, where they complement traditional combustion engines. The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept is set to utilize three Yasa motors, collectively generating over 1,000 kW (1,360 hp).
As with many technological breakthroughs, these advancements often appear first in luxury models before becoming more accessible. The hope is that as production scales up and costs decrease, Yasa’s innovative electric motors will become available in a broader range of vehicles, enhancing the electric vehicle market as a whole.
